The newest USS South Dakota recently completed its first sea trial.

The attack submarine is based in New London, Conn. It has a complement of 117 enlisted sailors and 17 officers.

It is the third U.S. Navy ship to be named the USS South Dakota. The first was an armored cruiser and the second was the famous Battleship X that served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters in WWII.

Facebook post from the USS South Dakota Commissioning Committee.

I pass from the COB. After 3 long years of crew training, shift work, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting; from a single hull section, to hull complete, to float off; from the days of Fridays off to working through the weekends, our submarine finally took to sea! The CO and I couldn’t be more proud of how well the crew performed, operating SOUTH DAKOTA at sea for the first time and bringing her home safely! The crew was focused; they broke records and set standards; and they earned every bit of praise received for their performance. Job well done!

BZ to the officers and crew of SOUTH DAKOTA!
