With the temps in the 60’s here in Spearfish I headed into Spearfish Canyon after work for my first fly fishing trip of the year. I was excited to try my new fly rod that I got this winter. My first stop was at the Maurice Intake, which is fast water but figured I would try some slack areas and see if I could hook something. I had no luck there, but was greeted by a pair of American Dippers who looked very happy that spring is here. They are such funny birds, they stand on a rock and dip up and down, which is how they got there name of course. I decided to head back and try a much slower section of the creek just past Bridal Veil Falls. After losing my pheasant tail nymph in a tree, I tied on a hairs ear nymph and on my first cast I caught a very colorful little rainbow. My first fish of 2019! I fished for about 20 more minutes but decided to head home. This early in the season the water is so cold the fish can barely move. They are like frozen fish sticks. Once things start to warm up a bit, some bugs start showing up, they will get more active. I will be back…
