April 11: Preservation Thursday: History, Mystery, and more! Stories and tales of the Frawley Ranch and Spearfish – Alan Maas and JR Hamblet will give a talk on the history of the Frawley Ranch and their experiences with Hank Frawley prior to his passing. Maas will also cover the mystery of the Thoen Stone and how it shaped his writing of The Kind Whisper. April 20: Patsy’s Day – Support our furry friends. Share in this annual celebration honoring Patsy, the beloved terrier of William Emery Adams. Guests who make a donation of any pet product for the Twin City Animal Shelter will receive free admission to the Historic Adams House on April 20. Guided tours on Patsy’s Day are hourly; the first tour leaving at 10:00 a.m. and the last tour of the day leaving at 4:00 p.m. Photos of cats and dogs available for adoption will be on display. May 2: Preservation Thursday: Boozers, Brothels, and Bare-Knuckle Brawlers: Buffalo Bill’s Little Known Business Partner – This presentation by author Kellen Cutsforth is an entertaining and informative look at the early days of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. It covers the adventures in America of an Englishman who became an unlikely partner in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and helped save the business from early financial ruin. Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center; 12:00 p.m.; free for members and $5 for non-members.
May 12: Mother’s Day Tours – In honor of Mother’s Day, the Historic Adams House and the Days of ‘76 Museum will offer free admission to visiting mothers. Show your mom how much you love her by sharing a tour of the beautifully restored Queen Anne-style home and explore vintage wagons, carriages, and stagecoaches from 1875-1910. June 4, 11, 18, and 25: Family Fun Tuesdays – Deadwood History, Inc. (DHI) hosts a family friendly event on Tuesday afternoons during the summer. On June 4, enjoy a Cowboy Sing-Along with one of the Deadwood Alive reenactors. June 11, Natural History Native Grasses will explore grasses native to the Black Hills and plant grass seeds in a container that children can take home. DHI will feature Hidden in the Midden on June 18. Learn what an archaeologist does and dig through a midden (an old garbage pile) to unearth a variety of artifacts that will help solve puzzling questions. On June 25, Hides, Horns, and Hooves will allow kids to dig into an old trunk that has a variety of hides, horns, and antlers that can be touched and examined. These events take place at Deadwood Outlaw Square following the Shootout; 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; these events are free.
June 14: History on the Lawn: The Past is Present –Portrait photographer and artist Kary Janousek from Fargo, North Dakota, will touch on the historical beginnings of photography and how it affected society. Explaining briefly the process of wet plate collodion and its specific role in history from the 1850s to the late 1880s, and why it still has a place in modern society today. The demonstration will pose a sitter, creating the plate, taking the exposure, and then fixing it on site for people to see the results. Five addition sittings will be sold for $75 per sitting at 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, and 3:30 p.m. Bring a lunch and enjoy the Historic Adams House lawn; 12:00 noon; free for members and $5 for non-members. In case of inclement weather, the lecture will be moved to the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC).
June 17 – 21: Nature Exploration Camp – Campers will explore nature and learn about birds, plants, bees, trees, and wildlife. Enjoy hiking and exploring the great outdoors during this five day camp for children in grades 4-6. Days of ‘76 Museum; 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; $50 for members and $55 for non-members. June 20: Northern Hills Community Band Concert – Break out the red, white, and blue for the Northern Hills Community Band concert. Enjoy live patriotic music and marches, as well as world-famous show tunes on the Historic Adams House lawn. 7:00 p.m.; admission by donation. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC).
June 26 – 28: Introduction to Archaeology Camp – Campers will learn the basics of archaeology, including how to set up a dig site, proper tool handling, how to identify and map artifacts, the importance of record keeping, and how artifacts are stored. This experience promises to spark student’s curiosity about the past and provide a unique opportunity for them to learn about different cultures and archaeological techniques in a fun and educational setting.
