This Online Student Quilt Auction features 24 quilts designed and created by 3rd Graders in Mrs. Sandy Nichols’ classes for the past 27 years. Bids can be made on this Facebook Event page and start at $25 for each quilt with additional bids to be made in $5 increments. All proceeds benefit the Spearfish Foundation for Public Education.
Mrs. Nichols started doing a class quilt each year after reading The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco to her students 27 years ago. She didn’t do a quilt for the first 10 years of her 37-year teaching career. She has also given away three of the quilts to families in memory of their child. As she prepares to retire at the end of the 2018-19 school year, Mrs. Nichols is offering the remaining 24 quilts for sale via online auction.
- Quilts are currently on display at Creekside Elementary with four at Spearfish High School. Pictures will be posted of each quilt offered for sale, along with the class list. Each quilt measures about 3 feet wide by 4.5 feet tall. It is possible that a child may have joined the class later in the year or left during the year and therefore may be named on the class list but may not have done a quilt square.
- Winning bidders will be notified via Facebook the evening of Thursday, May 23. Quilts can be picked up in the Creekside Elementary office on Friday, May 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or they can be mailed for an extra $10 charge.
- Bid online on the SFPE Facebook page. Payments can be made via PayPal on the SFPE Facebook page or the SFPE website under the “Donation” Link.
